Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. When she was a child, Ford battled anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She joined at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized the school was not suitable for her. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won a position on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on an episode from 1991 of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate began her TV debut in 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
